15 Consejos para alimentar a tu conejo. 15 tips to feed your rabbit

1. We must provide food continuously. Unlike other animals whose digestive system works by contraction, the digestive system of the rabbit runs by thrust, i.e. that the food that the rabbit ingests,  pushes which is already inside and thus will be digested. It is important to keep transit and for this reason rabbits spend most of the day eating small amounts of food. They can get to eat up to 80 times a day! Rabbits are always eating, so if they stop, its time to alert a vet
2. Rabbit must eat 3 types of food: hay, fresh food  (fruits and vegetables) and dry food. It should be as varied as possible since the same menu tends to make them very monotonous and boring and demonstrate a keen interest in novel foods.
3 Hay is the most important part of the rabbit diet since it provide plenty of fiber to help digestion. Hay is formed by grasses or legumes along with flowers of grass that are collected fresh and left to dry (unlike the straw which is collected dry) to feed the animals. It is important to be of high quality to avoid containing pesticides or substances hazardous to our rabbit.

4. Fresh food (fruits and vegetables) should be 20% of the total diet. They must be clean and dry. Among the vegetables that they can be offered are: the beets, broccoli, alfalfa, parsley, celery, spinach, dandelion leon, carrots, beets, tomatoes, romain lettuce (not iceberg), clover, cucumber, turnip, escarole, endive, radishes, artichokes, green beans, watercress, cabbage, basil, lettuce. Rabbits can also eat a variety of fruits such as: papaya (helps in digestion), orange, (rich in vitamin C) strawberry, guava, mango, pear, apple, pineapple or peach.

5. Dry feed should be 10% of diet. Too much dry food can lead to obesity in our rabbit but a lack of it could result in lack of certain vitamins
6. Food mustn´t  be offered cold but at room temperature.
7. Dietary changes must be made gradually or could cause diarrhea. If  the rabbit has diarrhea the first thing to do is remove vegetables and fruits.

8. You can use the seeds like dried fruit or cereals as a reward but not as part of their diet and always in small numbers. An excess can cause overweight. There are ready-made goodies in the market to be used as a reward or sparingly as part of the variety of food.
9. If we notice that the rabbit begins to gain weight should weigh it once every 10 day and remove
awards and seeds and reduce fruits.
10. On the other hand, if we notice that the rabbit begins to lose weight should increase the amount of dry feed or search one of higher quality.
11. What you should never do is to decrease the amount of hay since it is the basis of its diet.
12. It´s forbidden salty food or sugary, chocolate, industrial cereals, nuts, corn, onion, potatoes, cheese and milky products, cooked food, bread and biscuits. If you're not sure if the rabbit can eat it, better not to offer.

13. You have to offer small pieces of woods to gnaw in order to maintain healthy teeth. Can be soaked in apple juice.
14. Rabbits must always have fresh and clean water. Drip bottles are the most appropriate.
15. the rabbits are coprophagous, i.e. eat their own poop. Although it seems an ugly custom is vital to prevent certain vitamin B and neurological deficits. Rabbits never eat feces expelled during the day, which are hard and ball-shaped, but only which defecates overnight that are softer, are grouped in the form of clusters and covered with a mucous fluid. Through its intake, the rabbit recovers some nutrients, such as vitamin B and certain minerals.
